King Street and Enmore Road

Cindy Tonkin - August 5, 2023

These are 3 altered books, from old encylopedia.

Each book shows a version of King Street, Newtown or Enmore Road Newtown. I did 2 of Enmore Road, one of South King St. Clearly I could do more (i have a few more of these old encylopediae in the cupboard) of the rest of King Street. What I love most about the Newtown/Enmore buildings is in fact the facades at the top of the buildings, so maybe another time I could do one of the facades (with a skyline?). Nicola suggested adding fold outs to these, and for now that won’t happen.

I just noticed that I forgot to add the iconic Newtown ball lamps to Enmore I, so I’ll do that and photograph again.

I have already written about some of the challenges and learnings from this series here.

The series was partially inspired by little shopfront drawings I always find attractive, partly by the book I bought of Eugene Atget’s Parisian shopfronts which I’m still to get to. This is WAY closer to home, historically and geographically!

I chose brown paper for the covers, mostly because it’s my paper of choice right now (such a stash of old Woolworths bags).
