Hockney at Carriageworks 26

Cindy Tonkin - October 28, 2026

I saw the David Hockney Bigger and Closer (not smaller and far away) on Sunday with Tracy.

Most of the images, other than the opera ones I had already seen, so it was lovely to re-see them.

I remember the first time I saw the multiple photo image, the one of the desert, (which he said took him days to shoot). it was in the Getty Centre in LA. i have always meant to do something similar, but i don’t think i have yet, so reminder! I particularly loved the portraits which I had not seen, the people doing the crossword.

I saw another exhibition of his in Melbourne – I think that was the one where I sat and watched him draw on his ipad. It sent me into drawing on a device mode, which i was obsessive about for a week or so. I’m about to go on holiday in Europe, and I think maybe i should re-institute the obsession – easier to transport!

I loved the perspective stuff, and I had already talked about it here.

overall this was a very expensive experience, I enjoyed it, but it was with another person – my experience of these film-fed displays is that I prefer to be alone, so I can linger, re-enjoy, stop watching a little then get back into it. That’s what happened when I saw the Van Gogh a while back.

i learnt this:

  • I could spend some time looking back on my own blog entries to find the things I want to do!
  • It’s worthwhile doing these blog entries for me, and my own thoughts are inspirational enough for me, i just have to do number 1, and look back
  • I love hockney’s colours (sometimes), i love the different take on perspective, i need to get around to making it happen for me

Here are some pix. I didn’t take enough first time around and then we got bored second time around for the opera bits. The things I most loved were the photographed portraits and I think I didn’t take any pix of them. Things would be on screen then dissolve partially, and often too quickly for me to take the pic.
