Hermitage and John Wolseley Melbourne Sept 2015

Cindy Tonkin - September 15, 2015

In September 2015 I flew to Melbourne. Here are my photos, which I discovered in 2024. I’m putting this in the correct date, But comments are more memories and reconstructions than valid in the moment things.

There seems to have been 3 big things in the day

  • The Hermitage
  • The Dome / State Library
  • John Wolseley

The Hermitage

My memory of this, borne out by my photographs was that it was most pleasing because of the decor. They had remodelled/created corridors and furniture and wall colours to match, i assume, the original Hermitage. The floors too. The art was kinda “classic” but not that pleasing. I did like the miniature houses and palaces in the gift shop (clearly). and the juxtaposition of 3d and 2d works.

The Dome / State Library

I visited the Dome and its galleries and took a batch of photos of it. I was looking for these (or some like them) recently, and couldn’t find them, but now I have them!!

John Wolseley

This was my primary reason for going to Melbourne – people had seen it and highly recommended it, and it wasn’t coming to Sydney. Plus my accountant was in Melbourne at the time so it was a great time to go see her and do some tax planning (again and again and again, it never ends). I wandered the galleries with great pleasure. watched a video of him printmaking on a tree by a lagoon, the classic John Wolseley stuff. There’s always a hint of madness about him, but his output is enchanting.
