Archy

Cindy Tonkin - June 25, 2025

This is an altered book. Archy and Mehitabel was published in 1931, it seems to be letter pressed. it has some lovely antique/vintage feeling pages, some of which I’ve preserved. Apparently it’s a bit of a classic text, and I tried reading it but my mind was not captured… until I read the final pages, and then i read backwards. So I’ve left the last few stories in the book for anyone who wants to actually read them. The original text was written in 2016, so I’m sure it’s available online, and it’s certainly available in kindle for cheap.

It uses images from Fashion the Century of the Designer which I have been plundering for a few weeks now. My original concept was to have shop windows, and while this isn’t exactly what I pictured I’m pleased with it.

Initially i left 5 pages between the black and white images, and I have now glued those pages together. I watched how Nicola read the book, and basically she just turned them 5 at a time to get to the image, so that was a reason to adapt it.

I like the monochrome of the black and white images on the faded yellow pages.

Here’s what the book looked like before I worked on it
