Ten Dresses

Cindy Tonkin - July 17, 2025

After I found the dolls which made the Dior Dolls I “ran out of ideas” so went to Pinterest. I checked out Russian Dolls and Concertinas and Carousels, and this is one of the ideas that came from that. This is 10 cricut-cut dresses, from my original cricut pattern (and some scissor enhancements) with new collars and cuffs.

i backed the b&w paisley card (it was originally some card I’d bought which was perforated to make quick business cards from, and never used). I cut the b&w card, then glued it to the backing sheets (yeah, i know i should have backed it first then cut it, but that wasn’t what i did this time).

I looked through my stores of random paper to find things that kept the original “hand-made” feel of my mother’s dresses from her stories, even though the rest of this is much removed from that story, it’s nice to stay faithful to the original! It was also nice to match random papers (and use up things I’ve been holding on to).

I’ve recently returned to my mum a heap of old paperwork I’d saved to make art from (sexist and hyper-formal typewritten documents from the department of education in the 70s, old bank statements, the original vintage photographs of her at school and college). I’ve scanned some of them, and what i havent scanned will just go into the abyss of what happens to her paperwork. I guarded them for a while (20 years maybe?), now she can have them back.

The consequence of that is that I am unearthing bits I want to use or chuck (it’s kind of 80% use, 20% chuck). So my stocks are slimming down, but i still have SO much, including untouched bought paper currently living under my bed and beautifully chunky paper i did acrylic works on 20 years ago also under my bed. The bed is a great place to store art in waiting! I enlarged the pigeon hole in a kallax (currently my bed frame) to make it wide enough to store big pieces of paper and card. It is out of sight, kevin loves having it to sleep on. What’s not to love?

I added buttons and collars to this piece, and I think it worked out nicely.
