My mum had saved this calendar and when I cleared up her house to move in about 2008 I saved it too, because I really loved the illustrations.
I came across it last week while searching for patterns to use in my Dresses series.
So i took a side-adventure. My plan was to set up a carousel pattern on the cricut so i could cut them again and again. I did that, and while it wasn’t perfect I will make it so that I have an automatic carousel book cut out ready to go. Once I made it, using an old calendar of skies that Bronwen Black gave me years ago (nice 250gsm shiny card), it was so pretty I almost stopped. But I pressed on and made the beautiful lilac the back of this work – it’s from the skies in the work Der Morgen (Zweite Fassung) (Morning, second version) by Philipp Otto Runge, 1777 – 1810.
But then made that the back and added in these illustrations by Merry Kohn. There are 12 in the calendar (obviously), and I took the ones that seemed to go together. I have different plans for the rest of the book (maybe another altered book with a frieze?).
I’m still not convinced that I got the depth of the middle layer quite right – it is reluctant to open out. but they turned out beautifully.
I’ve made several vids, this one of the final product:
And this of the in-progress which gives a much better view of each frame (if partial):
And here are the images of the work.
