Big Blue Square

Cindy Tonkin - March 5, 2024

This canvas has been in my studio, leaning against the wall for at least 2 years. It used to be something else (who can remember what?), and I took the canvas that I’d pinned over it off, and have been collaging and painting it ever since.

I started with a desire to do something with blues in it which would work on the newly unearthed wall above the stairs, where the plaster fell off and Mitch scraped it back to expose concrete and vintage wallpaper. We covered it then in glue, because the old wall paper (more than 100 years old) was slowly drying out and peeling off. It has a lovely patina which I could not have easily created.

So this piece was to complement all of that

I don’t know if it does, but i think it’s done.

Used a lot of blue paint – i haven’t painted for a long long time, and i have tubes of fabulous, high quality acrylic paint i just am not using. Added some bits of college ephemera from recent pieces – letters cut out from the cricut, the outlines of things which I’ve made on the cricut (windows cut for my houses, for example) which I couldn’t bear to throw away, now have a place in this piece.

It was pretty much done, and I had a spare hour, so I photographed it on the table outside. And went away for 5 days. So it rained on the canvas.

The images below show it. The first one is a lighter colour more because of the vagaries of photographing in daylight, and there’s a lot of sheen on it. The second one, post-rain is slightly different because I added some crayon and some water colour, but you can see that some of the letters have kinda cried a little.

I think it’s done. we’ll find out eventually!
