National Gallery Easter 2026

Cindy Tonkin - April 16, 2026

I was in town for the National Folk Festival (for Shanties), so I popped into the gallery for a visit before i left Canberra.

As such I wasn’t going to see any particular exhibition, but thought i’d visit my favourites (Joseph Cornell mostly). Didn’t find him, but had a fine time anyway.

The ground floor was closed, which reduced the number of works on display. The exhibition they had one was Fifth National Indigenous Art Triennial. Some great installations (see the black and white foyer and the red white and black striped one with the hanging pieces and a tree), and some other bodies of work, The Star Cve wsa most lovely (tiny stars on aluminium).

The exit from the “art” part of the exhibition had a lovely blessing and some 3d objects over the exit. Then the next room was all indigenous-designed furniture – the dining table particularly impressed me.

Then back in the gallery I found Blue Poles, which from across a major gallery looked like just another piece of art (it’s been moved from it’s usual place, where it had pride of place). It’s still a good piece, just not as honoured.

Was kinda surprised to see a dead white Frenchman’s piece (the Gauguin) had been recently acquired. I thought we’d moved on, but clearly not (maybe it was on sale?).

There was also a Proofs and Processes Kenneth Tyler exhibition, where sometimes I preferred the plates from the printing process over the final work (or at least appreciated both).

For an hour or so spent it made me happy!
