This is part of the ongoing medieval themed board book I’ve been working on for a few months now.
This book began as Find Spot at Pre-school, you’ll find a video of the contents below. I found Spot in a book box left on someone’s front fence several years ago.
Having learnt from Alphabet Book and Alice is pregnant, I clad the pages in china-coated pages, this time from the text of The Things that Matter. It was a remaindered book that Sophie gave me. Large format. had great images or objects, which i have used in other works. this was a change to take the lovely print on a useful journey!
I like board books because they allow for individual self-contained artworks on each page, but can more easily lend themselves to a quick theme. In this book I didn’t keep anything of the original book.
I found many of these original medieval manuscript illuminations to be amazingly modern in their feel. Some pages have a Klimt-esque element to them, which I do like. Maybe Gustav was inspired by them?
All of the medieval images come from this book, which I bought at the J. Pierpont Morgan Library in 2008. To be honest part of its appeal was the miniature nature of the book. It was a brief time when the Australian Dollar was doing well against the US Dollar, and a holiday where James and I were cashed up. We spent thousands of dollars on books and many many hours in bookstores, so one more tiny thing made no difference. We shipped books back to Sydney from New York on our last day there.
There’s more detail in the video if you want to watch it.
Size wise it’s 18x18cm.
This series did send me on a side quest for stamps to make the repeating patterns work, and the outputs will make it to this blog soon.
