Gelli Plate Adventures II

Cindy Tonkin - September 23, 2026

I re-made my gelli plates, i now have 3 x circles and a square. Again, by the end of the session they started to split, but i now think i’ll either

  • remake them (30 seconds in the microwave and wait overnight)
  • live with the splits as part of the serendipity of it all.

I am not doing anytning precise, and as long as i clean away the acrylic that dries in the cracks I reckon i’ll be ok. If not, revert!

This time around I used old sheet music, and i layered onto the page, more like i would if i were painting or collaging. where the page seemed right or not needing the colour i had on my palette I didn’t add it. I’m very pleased to say that the acrylic “print” I make is fine for stacking one on top of the other – since the way I like to work is many pieces at once (access my unconscious process? indulge my ADHD need to be busy? allow serendipity to kick in?). so here’s last night’s stack.

What am I liking?

  • the greys – where I had a green on my roller / plate and didn’t clean it (i didn’t clean at all through this) and the mix happened
  • the mix – where that mix was partial – a bit of blue and some left over orange
  • the dirty roller with those colours
  • the letters that are less vibrant or ghostly
  • in contrast the bright letters with a strong texture.

I have also been thinking through uses for this.

  • collage torn or cut, maybe letters, like on The Crime on the wall (tbc)
  • pieces in themselves
  • background to be coloured over like the Night and Home
