Nicola and I popped down to the Nnungunggula gallery in Mittagong this week.
As I’ve said before, beautiful building.
Clarice Beckett drew us there, and her muted tones and blurred images were just lovely. I was in two minds about a series of images I would have called “drafts” – her sister had donated them to the collection, and were it my work I would probably have preferred them to NOT be displayed. I felt the same way when I visited Picasso’s house in Paris years ago, and looked at many porcelain objects inexpertly done – he would have chosen to only display some of them, I imagine, were he alive.
The surprise was Mirra Whale’s work: some stunning still lives in charcoal. I didn’t photograph all of her work, but have filed her name in my memory, because I’d not seen it before, and now I’m (again) thinking I need to do some still lives.
Separately, I browsed Kinokuniya’s art books this week. See here.
