Chair concertina

Cindy Tonkin - July 12, 2019

If you’ve followed my instagram channel then you will know I take a lot of photos of chairs.

Originally I took photos of chairs and tables to make a chair series of paintings. See also here and here.

Then i started taking them because i was seeing so many chairs abandoned by the side of the road when i walked through the inner west.

So this week, with a whole week on holiday in Bowral and the intention to begin painting again I began last week by drawing a frieze of some of my instagram chairs. that’s the yellow one with pencil marks. As I did it i realised it was very collage-y in its approach, with size and placement mattering little.

Once I’d done that i tried again, this time with colour – and you can see the brown and orange frieze below.

The paper it’s on are 3 concertinas I bought from a stationery sale more than 10 years ago. I found them in my cupboard, and with my current focus on using things i’ve “kept for good”, now is the time. I have a third one which is pink and turquoise, so that’s to come.
